Overview

A short drive out of Nairobi’s central business district is the Nairobi National Park. Wide open grass plains and backdrop of the city scrapers, scattered acacia bush play host to a wide variety of wildlife including the endangered black rhino, lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, buffaloes, giraffes and diverse birdlife with over 400 species recorded. Visitors can enjoy the park’s picnic sites, three campsites and the walking trails for hikers. Nairobi offers a unique urban safari experience, with lions, rhinos, and other wildlife just a short drive from the city centre. Visitors can tour the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust to meet and learn about rescued elephant calves or enjoy a close encounter with giraffes at the Giraffe Centre.

Top Highlights

Nairobi National Park, covering just 45 square miles, is one of Africa’s smallest parks and uniquely located within Kenya’s capital city. Despite its urban setting, it offers impressive wildlife sightings across its open plains, rocky ridges, and streams that flow into the acacia-lined Mbagathi River. While elephants are absent, the park hosts the rest of the Big Five, and nearby, visitors can see orphaned baby elephants at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, situated near the main gate. The park is also home to around 40 black rhinos, making it a key sanctuary for this endangered species. Fences mark its boundaries, separating it from the city suburbs of Langata and Karen, yet wildlife continues to thrive in this unique urban wilderness.
