Africa's 2nd Largest Peak Whether scaling peaks or enjoying scenic walks, Mount Kenya offers unforgettable mountain experiences. Mount Kenya National Park spans 277 square miles and encompasses much of the lower slopes of Mount Kenya, Africa’s second tallest peak after Kilimanjaro. The park supports diverse wildlife, including elephants, buffaloes, black rhinos, and leopards. Rare and endangered species such as the sunni buck and albino zebra can also be found here, along with colobus monkeys at lower elevations. Recognized for its ecological and cultural significance, the park and surrounding forest were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. The fertile lower slopes of the mountain are farmed by the Kikuyu, Meru, and Embu communities, who have long lived in the region and maintain a deep cultural connection to the mountain’s landscape and resources.
