Vast open plains in the shadow of the snow-capped silhouette of Mount Kenya create a tranquil and secluded setting, where game drives encounter wildlife including endangered species such as black rhino, Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe and wild dogs with few other vehicles in sight. An important wildlife area scattered with a mosaic of farms and cattle ranches, conservationists and ranchers alike have worked together in this wildlife refuge that supports large numbers of game. Steeped in history from the colonial days in Kenya, this is a significant natural area from a safari and conservation perspective. There are a variety of ranches and conservancies that can be visited depending on one’s interest. From wildlife areas, such as Lewa Downs and Borana, a protective haven for the endangered black rhino; to ranches and conservancies further north more focused on community and adventure activities such as horseback riding, camel and walking safaris. It is also a perfect base to explore the wilder north and great lakes of Kenya.
